SPECIAL NOTES FOR GOTM100
UU Mods: This is February and we will be upsizing the UU's in this game. All UU's will have the attribute that was improved increased by 1. This primarily applies to the Offensive, Defensive or Movement rates of the UU. There are 2 Special cases where the UU's primary attributes were not increased; in both cases the UU's price was reduced by 10 shields, and in one case where the UU received an extra ability, that ability was logically improved. Finally, all UU's (except those in the Predator games) gain a Defensive shot.
Special Civilizations: there are 5 special civilizations in the game, the Human Players which you will be playing, the Ancient Elites, the Modern Elites, the GOTM Staff and Polynesia.
Human Players: based on Carthage, so you will see Hannible as the leader headhead. The leader is CivFanatic, which we all are! Free techs are the typical Alphabet and Masonry. The UU is a modified Numedian Mercenary (with a special name - see beloe), it's value is 3-4-1. The leader names are based on Gold Medal recipients over the last 10 games. The city names are a testament to the support that CFC provides to the Civ3 player.
Ancient Elites: based on the Celts, so Brennus appears as the leaderhead. The leader is named after the most dominating player from the early Civ3 GOTM - SirPleb! The UU is the modified Gallic Swordsman, 3-2-3, called the "Ancient Gallic Swordsman"; offensive speed is prized by elite players, so a 3 move unit seemed appropriate. Leaders and cities are named after early Gold Medal winners ranked on the Medal list.
Modern Elites: based on Germany, so Bismarck appears as the leaderhead. The leader is named after the all-time Gold Medal winner - klarius! The UU is also a modified Gallic Swordsman, 3-2-3, called the "Modern Gallic Swordsman"; more recent elite players still like a fast offensive unit. Leaders and cities are named after later Gold Medal winners ranked on the Medal list.
GOTM Staff: based on India, so Gandhi appears as the leaderhead. The leader is ainwood who has formed the GOTM competition that we see today. A close 2nd is AlanH who has generated nearly all of the support tools, data structures and displays that make GOTM function as well as it does. The UU is a modified War Elephant who cost is reduced by 10 shields. Leaders and cities are named after staff members; some of the names are a real trip back in time!
Polynesia: based on the Aztecs, so Montezuma appears as the leaderhead. A full write-up appears in the Game Details for COTM43 and I'll give a brief synopsis here. One UU is the Polynesian Raider (3-2-1) which looks like a Jaguar Warrior, can do Amphibious attacks, and is available with Map-Making. 2nd UU is the Polynesian Marine (5-2-1) which looks like a Berzerk, can do Amphibious attacks, and is available with Feudalism. Both had their Attack increased 1. Polynesian Trade is not available because PTW doesn't support civ 'flavors'. Polynesia has 3 ship types that do not sink in sea or ocean. The Outrigger Canoe is like a C3C Curragh, looks like a Galley, costs 10 shields, can't transport units and is available with Alphabet. The Polynesian Catamaran is a Galley replacement that doesn't sink and is available with Map-Making. The Migration Canoe is a Caravel replacement that doesn't sink and is available with Astronomy. The Polynesians are Commercial and Expantionistic giving them the same starting Techs as the early C3C Polynesia. Leaders and cities are named after Polynesian real and mythic leaders, and actual cities scattered throughout Polynesia.
UU for the Human Players: we appreciate the participation of the players in the GOTM competition; it validates the effort the Staff put in to prepare the games, and greater participation enhances the overall experience for all players. One player has demonstrated their true CivFanaticism by playing and submitting a game for EVERY GOTM competition scored so far - donsig! To recognize this dedication, the Human Player UU has been named the "donsig CivFanatic". Go out and conquer!
As always, have fun playing the GOTM and we hope you join us in the postgame discussions!
