Mediterranean Resources

Mediterranean Olives RipeningGotm21 introduces a free graphics package with ten new resources that have been used in tandem with existing terrain characteristics to provide a distinctive Mediterranean character to the game.

Most of the new resources are substantially like other standard bonus or luxury resources but can be found on different combinations of terrain. The primary adaptive response that players must make in order to quickly assess how these resources can impact your game is to use a fundamental understanding of how the basic food, shield, and commerce values of any given terrain type might interact with the bonus food, shield, and commerce values of these added resources under the limiting factors of the Despotism form of government.

Nine of these resources can be grouped into three major groupings that can be looked at together as a common set of strategic choices. Because of common terrain locations and actual real world relationships that exist between these resources, you may actual find these bonuses located in groups in a Mediterranean style map.

You must have the Gotm21 versions of the resources.pcx and resources_shadows.pcx properly installed from the game pack that matches your software version in order for these resources to be available to you in Gotm21. The resources also include special security features that help prevent external exploitation of resource locations that should not be visible to most players until the legitimately hidden areas of the map are revealed during progress of the game.

Wool, Sheep, and Lambs

These three resources are independent but will be used to provide regional concentrations of economic activity in much the same way the activity would occur in a real life mediterranean culture. All three of these resources can be found on hills and plains in areas that would be considered secondary grazing land for many other domesticated animal species.

Sample in-game view of a typical array of Wool, Sheep, and LambsWool is the full scale luxury resource that can be connected to your trade network and exchanged with other civilizations. Wool producing operations would also produce sheep by products such as lanoline, cheese, meat, and agriculture productivity enhancement. A single location of Wool will also add 2 food, 1 shield, and 1 commerce unit to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. From an in-game impact analysis, the individual terrain square impact of a single Wool resource is the same as Cattle located next to a river.

Sheep have almost the same local economic value as Wool but cannot be traded outside of your civilization and do not have a luxury/happiness benefit. Sheep operations produce products such as fiber, meat, and agriculture productivity enhancement. A single location of Sheep will add 2 food and 1 shield to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. You can view Sheep as being the same as Cattle with the location choices of hills and plains.

Lambs complete the set of resource options for the Sheep type agriculture enhancements but can be viewed as only producing a food source. A single location of Lambs will add 2 food to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. You can view Lambs as being the same as Wheat with the location choices of hills and plains.

Oysters, Pearls, and Rocks (offshore)

These three resources are independent but will often be seen in similar uses to add visual interest to otherwise neglected coastal areas of the maps and to provide regional concentrations of water based economic activity in much the same way the activity would occur in a real life culture that is closely associated with coastal areas. All three of these resources can be found in the coast terrain type.

Sample in-game view of a typical location with Oysters and Pearls

Oysters are a bonus food resource that is identical in value and implementation to Fish. A single location of Oysters will add 2 food and 1 commerce to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen.

Sample in-game view of a typical location with offshore rocksPearls would technically be a luxury resource, but the current civ3 game design provides no possibility to harvest and trade a luxury resource that does not exist on land. As a result, the Pearls resource is like Oysters bonus resource with added commercial benefit from selling being able to sell the pearls and shell products for money in your local economy. A single location of Pearls will add 2 food and 3 commerce to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. From an in-game impact analysis, the individual terrain square impact of a single Pearls resource is the same as Fish plus "Ivory at Sea".

Rocks, or offshore rocks, add economic value by causing the need for pilots and other skilled local experts to guide or signal passing vessels out of harms way and can can cause unseen shipwrecks that may cause additional valuable materials to wash up on nearby seashores. Rocks can also enhance the scenic and religious tourism value of coastal locations throughout time. A single location of Rocks will add 1 shield and 1 commerce to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen.

Olives, Goats and Menudo (young goats or kids)

Sample in-game view of a typical location with Goats and MenudoThese three resources are independent but will often be seen in clustered uses to add visual interest to otherwise neglected marginal terrain areas of the maps. All three of these resources can be found in the Desert, Hills, or Mountains terrain types. These three resources are the only resources that can produce food in mountainous terrain or unirrigated desert climates.

Goats are a bonus resource that represent one of the earliest domesticated animal species and an agricultural resource that can be obtained in some of the least hospitable terrain conditions in the world. Goats can produce products such as fiber, leather, meat, cheese, and milk. A single location of Goats will add 2 food and 1 shield to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. You can view Goats as being the same as Cattle with location choices in the worst possible terrain.

"Menudo" (the name is chosen to be deliberately a lot different) are just the young or light version of Goats. Young goats primarily are used for meat and some minimal leather products. A single location of Menudo will add 2 food and to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. You can view Menudo as being the same as Wheat with location choices in the worst possible terrain.

Sample in-game view of a typical location with Olives

Olives are probably one of the most significant historic and cultural products of the Mediterranean region. They can be grown on steep, rough rocky hillsides and in the coastal mountain foothills that would otherwise be uncultivated. Olive groves are mentioned in the texts of antiquity and can live for hundreds of years. Olives can produce food, oil, and symbolic gifts of peace and prosperity. A single location of Olives will add 2 food and 1 commerce to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. You can view Olives as being the same as Wheat next to a river but with location choices in previously unproductive terrain.

Sample in-game view of a typical location with CottonCotton

This final resource adds an additonal Luxury/Trade resource that can be found at the fringes of deserts and plains that may not normally be irrigated for food production.

A single location of Cotton will add 1 shield and 2 commerce to your base economic output whenever that location can be assigned to be worked by a citizen. You can view Cotton as being the same as Oil with location choices in desert and plains and without fear that the resource will vanish.

NOTE: You may discuss specifics about how you can prepare to recognize and use these resources in Gotm21-Mediterranean Melee by using the special discussion thread established for that purpose.

Conquest Class Game Details for Gotm21 and Tourney Game 5-1

Players who choose to play in the Conquest class game will receive a set of bonuses designed to help them focus on key early strategic decisions that may help them to get more enjoyment out of the specific conditions of this game. The five fastest players to submit valid Space ship victories in the Conquest Class game will be permanently recorded in the Tournament records database.

The intent of these changes is to raise the difficulty with altering the strategic play progress from that which you would see in a very difficult Monarch or Emperor Level game.
