According to legend, the Sampo is a magical artifact, forged by the Great Blacksmith Ilmarinen, which brings health and prosperity to the land. Unfortunately for you, the evil witch Louhi has stolen the Sampo. As a result, your lands are impoverished and infertile. You will have difficulty finding health and happiness resources unless you can find the Sampo. You are not required to find the Sampo to win the game, but since you are playing as Vainamoinen (Brennus) of the Vikings, a role-playing quest to find the Sampo might be fun.

You will play as Vainamoinen (Brennus). You are Spiritual and Charismatic, and start with Hunting and Fishing. The Spiritual trait gives you +100% when building temples as well as no anarchy. The Charismatic trait gives you +1 happy per city, and Monuments and Broadcast Towers each give an additional +1 happy. An additional benefit is that promotions require 25% less XP. Your unique unit is the Berserker, which has the same specs as the maceman it replaces except starts with the amphibious promotion and +10% city attack. Your unique building is the Trading Post, which replaces the Lighthouse and provides +1 movement to naval units.

IMPORTANT: This game must be played with the BtS 3.19 patch, and the BUFFY mod version 3.19.003 for Windows players, MACBUFFY for Mac players.

Besides the normal contender, we sometimes provide an easier save (the adventurer save) and an extra-hard save (the challenger).

Adventurer (the easy save)

The adventurer starting save has been changed to make your game a bit easier. However, if you submit an adventurer game, you won't eligible to win any of the medals or fastest finish awards when the results are published.
