Welcome to the 159th Conquests Game of the Month. This game was created by Captain_Jack.
In this game, we play at Emperor level as Ragnar of the Scandinavians, a Militaristic and Seafaring tribe and start the game with knowledge of Alphabet and Warrior Code. Comforted and encouraged by the Norse Gods you will send your people far from your stark and forbidding homeland in search of treasure, resources, and green fields. They are ready for viking, and they spill over the gunwales of their longboats onto unsuspecting shores singing their battle hymn:
We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow
The hammer of the gods
Will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde, sing and cry
Valhalla, I am coming
On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore
Your Berserks are terrifying and can use their longboats to wreak havoc on coastal cities, but the AI has significant advantages at the Emperor level. It will take strategic foresight and tactical cunning to achieve victory. Lykke til.
You will have two Unique Units available to you, either of which may trigger a golden age :
- Viking Longboat
- Available at Engineering
- Attack 1/ Defense 1/ Movement 6/ Transport 4/ Not upgradable
- Fast and seaworthy vessels to transport your hordes
- n.b.: The Civilopedia entry describes the Dromon upon which this unit is based, not the actual Viking Longboat. Ignore it. (But your boat will sometimes breathe fire.)
- Berserk
- Now available at Feudalism.
- Upgradable to Marine when Amphibious Assault is researched.
The map is designed to challenge your ability to:
- Locate and secure vital resources
- Develop sea lanes and maintain trade
- Manage diplomatic relations with feisty neighbors
The normal changes to the Conquests rules apply to this game: Iron locations are fixed, and Workers instead of Settlers can be popped from Goody Huts. In addition to this, the following changes have been made to terrain causing Disease in order to limit the impact of chance on the competition:
- Flood Plains do not cause Disease
- Jungles and Wetland have their Disease level lowered from 50% to 25%
- Knowledge of Sanitation cancels Disease in Jungles and Wetlands

Special notes for C3C
NoAIPatrol Setting: There has been a lot of discussion regarding the barb behavior in C3C and how the NoAIPatrol flag controls that behavior. For the COTM competition it is highly recommended that all players set the NoAIPatrol flag to 0 to permit fairly consistent barb behavior across all player's games. This is done by opening the "conquests.ini" file in your favorite editor, adding the line "NoAIPatrol=0" to it, and saving.
