C-IV Gotm LXVIII:
Lord of the Yahoos
To be marooned in a strange and uncharted land was nothing new for Dr. Lemuel Gulliver, but to be banished and disdainfully discarded like last week’s hay was a new and demoralizing experience. The Houyhnhnms were the first society Dr. Gulliver had met in a long time that seemed truly admirable, and, although they were horses, Dr. Gulliver had felt content, even privileged, to live amongst them. Still, the Assembly of the Houyhnhnms had put it to a vote, and the “neighs” had it. Despite his pleas, he had been cast out and forced to live with the Yahoos.
Of all the dystopias he had seen, this was the worse. The Yahoos were violent, slowwitted, utter slaves to their own natural vices . . . and smelled terrible. As far as he could determine, they had no social law, no sense of compassion for their fellow Yahoos, and (aside from their obsession with the shiny stones that they dug tirelessly for) no appreciation for natural beauty or any concept of art.
Considering his current situation, Dr. Gulliver was on the verge of despair, when he suddenly experienced a character-altering epiphany. He was tired of being a gullible, ineffectual observer and victim of fate’s cruel schemes. He had met with the greatest figures in all of history, he had witnessed firsthand the failings of countless cultures, and his eyes had been opened to the pitfalls of governance. These people were humanity in its base form, but . . . maybe . . . they could be sculpted. He would educate them, lead them, and transform them into a society of his own design, his own utopian civilization. Dr. Gulliver smiled. With the Yahoo’s help, he would acquaint those intellectual equine bigots with the concept of an English saddle and a riding crop.
In this game of the month you play as Jonathan Swift’s Dr. Lemuel Gulliver in the final episode of his epic travels. The game is set at Deity level -- which is appropriate for your Yahoo followers, who are inherently malcontent, retarded in their rate of learning, socially dysfunctional, and hygienically impaired – so you will have to overcome an inferior rate of both research and production, along with limited health and happiness, not to mention the burden of excessive maintenance costs. But all is not hopeless! You begin in a somewhat isolated corner of the globe, with room for expansion. What’s more, abundant throughout your lands – and nowhere else -- are the Houyhnhnms. Although the Houyhnhnms are pacifists within their own society, if you assimilate these large intelligent herbivores, you will not only gain aids to production, but also unique mounted units providing a potentially decisive tactical advantage.
Lord Gulliver is Spiritual and Expansive; starting with Mysticism and Fishing. The Spiritual trait grants No Anarchy during changes in civics or religions and allows double production speed of Temple. The Expansive trait provides +3 health per city and double production speed of Granary and Harbor.
Your Unique unit is the Conquistador which replaces the Knight. Its special abilities include immunity to first strikes and +50% attack versus melee units. To build the Conquistador requires that you have discovered Guilds and Horseback Riding and have the resources of Horses and Iron.
As always, have fun playing the GOTM and we hope you join us in the postgame discussions!
