You are Peter of the Russians. Your homeland is a set of islands - generous in land area but a little short of resources. All AIs live on a single landmass, which is accessible from your homeland by galleys. Rumours exist of mysterious uninhabited islands that cannot be reached without crossing the dangerous oceans - but since in 4000BC it is widely believed that the oceans are impossible to cross, your people generally laugh at these rumours. You are fortunate to have loyal to you some highly skilled soldiers (one batallion each of axemen, swordsmen, explorers and spearmen) who managed to sail to the AI continent to explore. Unfortunately, due to an unfortunate 'incident' involving the axemen and Mansa Musa's daughters, which took place during a sacred religious feast, you are now locked into permanent war with Mansa Musa, and also with his allies Bismarck and Genghis Khan. The other AIs (Alexander, Roosevelt and Julius Caesar) have opted to remain strictly neutral and you may not declare war on them. I believe there is enough spare land that domination should be possible by conquering all your enemies, but that does depend on how successful the neutral civs are at occupying land, so I give no guarantees. Conquest victories are unlikely to be possible. Use the exploring units how you wish, but bear in mind they are costing you (currently 1gpt). Also remember that if you use them to weaken your war adversaries, you might cause more valuable land to be taken by the neutral civs.
As always, have fun playing the GOTM and we hope you join us in the postgame discussions!
New Players
The Newbies' Guide to Getting Started tells you how to get set up to play GOTMs as well as explaining the competition rules. Please note our no-replaying rule. Choose your Game
Besides the normal contender, we sometimes provide an easier save (the adventurer save) and an extra-hard save (the challenger).
Below are the details for the saves we are providing for this game. You can choose to play and submit any one of these:
Adventurer (the easy save)
The adventurer starting save has been changed to make your game a bit easier. However, if you submit an adventurer game, you won't eligible to win any of the medals or fastest finish awards when the results are published.
These are your adventurer bonuses:
- You play the game at prince level

Contender (the standard save)
This is the save that most people play. If you want to enter the competition with a normal game, then download and play this one.
Contender bonuses:
- None

Challenger (the extra-hard save)
Play this save if you want an extra challenge. Your entry will be marked out as a contender
entry when the results are published, so you'll get extra kudos.
These are your challenger equalizers:
- You play the game at emperor level (but it will still be scored as if at monarch)
